Free stickers are the reason this site was given its name. In July 2000, I had the idea for ismokeweed.org. I would print a bunch of ismokeweed stickers and distribute them far and wide. The point was to inject the stoner market with the meme of ismokeweed, with the intention that people would be encouraged to talk about pot openly as well as to visit ismokeweed.org.
The hope was that people discussing pot openly would offer an alternative perspective to the negative stigma surrounding the plant cannabis sativa.
The stickers would also advertise the website, drawing more people into the campaign by giving away free stickers.
In the beginning, visitors to the site could complete a simple form online to request free stickers. Stickers were also given to the fifteen or so customers who bought ismokeweed.org merchandise over the years. This is what the original stickers looked like:
Between July 2000 and May 2001, over 1700 individual sticker requests were processed (over F*I*V*E per day!). Usually, about three stickers were sent to each address.
On May 15, 2001, a fan of the site posted the sticker campaign to a "free stuff" newsletter. Within fifteen hours, over 600 unique sticker requests were logged. Much interest in the site was generated, but this sudden unexpected surge was overwhelming and forced the free sticker promotion to be suspended indefinitely.
